The Water-Rat Gypsy is one of our early inland waterway designs being compact, but internally quite spacious despite its length of 18’6”.


The boat is very stable and easily handled and with an outboard engine can turn almost in its own length from stationary.


This current brokerage boat is a good example of our Water-Rat Gypsies built between 1975 and 1982


Externally it is in very good condition for its age, and internally it was totally re-fitted by a skilled amateur joiner to a very good standard in the early 1990’s.


The unusual, and very space-efficient current layout provides four adult sized berths, effectively in two cabins.


The forward compartment at night provides a compact double berth whilst in the day, with port and starboard bed bases raised and side mounted, twin dinette tables are created. Alternatively, with the tables down it becomes a cushioned saloon seating space with a small central coffee table.


On the starboard side, opposite the galley there is a washroom/toilet compartment with the wash basin let into a vanity unit. The mixer tap to the wash basin has a shower head. The toilet is twin tank Porta-potti.


The boat has the benefit of Propex gas-fired blow air central heating and the heater is neatly installed at floor level in the cupboards under the washroom vanity unit.


Water heating is from a gas fired, room sealed “Malaga” storage heater, again by the British manufacturer Propex. It has a 13 L storage capacity and is unobtrusively housed at high level in the rear cabin just aft of the washroom.


Although there is no shower aboard the boat at present, a shower tray could be built into the base of the washroom; the Malaga water heater is sufficient to provide a good hot shower and has recovery time of less than twenty minutes.


The galley area comprises small worktops around a stainless steel 2 burner hob/grill/sink/drainer “combi” unit and underneath there is an oven, and a 60L Electrolux gas fridge which was serviced by us in November 2018. All galley appliances are very clean, carefully used and in good working order. There are also food and crockery storage spaces below the seating next to the drainer and in the top of the wardrobe. Lighting throughout the boat is by modern LED strip lights.


The main rear cabin space provides cushioned bench seating on the starboard side with storage space under and there is a well-designed closed-front bedding storage unit on the port side below a high-level worktop. There are water storage tanks at floor level under this storage unit.


Immediately inside the rear entry doors there is a drawer for tools and on the other side, a slim storage cupboard suitable for storage of short wet-weather clothing.


The boat’s batteries (2 x 85 A/hr) and a 3-way electrical master switch are also at the rear of the boat below the entry doors and are housed in their own battery locker. The batteries are charged both from the engine and from two roof-mounted solar panels which feed through a charge controller with LED lights denoting the state of charge.


The boat is powered by a quiet tiller-steered 8 hp 4-stroke Yamaha outboard; the top of the tiller has ingenious flip back handle to ensure easy entry from to deck to cabin whilst moored up. The engine was new in 2003 and has been serviced annually over the past five years.


The rear deck safety rail is cantilevered to the rear to maximise the rear deck operational space, effectively making the boat’s overall length just over 19 ft.


Externally the craft is in good condition for its age and free from major impact damaged having had only 3 careful owners from new. The cabin sides, end panels and deck are all still in original grp. gel-coat finish and will polish up well avoiding the need for painting. The hull itself has been painted and anti-fouled below water line; re-anti fouling is due next year or two.


The boat internally is clean and tidy, is well equipped and appliances well cared for, but some of the carpet lining in the forward cabin area is tired especially on the inside of the front doors and would benefit cosmetically from replacement.


The Boat Safety Certificate is valid to May 2021.


The boat and all its loose equipment are being offered at the fair price of £9,950.00


It is currently at its moorings at north end of the South Oxford Canal and can be viewed in company with the Vendor by prior arrangement through ourselves. There is no trailer available at present but second-hand ones do become available from time to time.    Delivery after sale can be arranged anywhere in UK.
